Where to drink coffee out of Auckland this summer

Back to articles

Heading out of Auckland over the next few weeks? Here’s our list of where to go so you can keep caffeinated  (or decaffeinated if that is more your thing) with the best Kōkako brews outside of the 09.

Northland

Fresh Kaiwaka — 1954 State Highway 1, Kaiwaka 0573

Mark and Anna, proprietors of Fresh in Kaiwaka, are good people of the north. You may remember them from their old location not far away in Mangawhai. Now serving the community of Kaiwaka and beyond and conveniently located right on State Highway One you’ll find Mark on the espresso machine making exceptional Kōkako Mahana coffees, and you’ll get an opportunity to taste Annas amazing gourmet pies, baking, and salads. This is not one to miss heading north or south this summer!

Visit Facebook for more information.

Parsley Pot — 786 Sandspit Road RD2, Snells Beach, Warkworth

Parsley Pot is a secret place tucked away in gorgeous cottage gardens, halfway between Warkworth and Snells Beach and hidden away from everywhere but still close to the action of the east coast. This family farm to table cafe offers up a considered kitchen menu alongside an excellent selection of cabinet food. Parsley Pot is vegan and vegetarian-friendly with gluten-free options, dogs are welcome too.

Visit Facebook for more information.

Mr Grind — 2 Wharf Road Warkworth, Auckland

In a little spot very close to the Mahurangi River in Warkworth you'll find Mr Grind, but there's no 'Mr' there, instead, you'll find Sally, the owner-operator who prides herself on making the best flat whites in town! Grab a cup (bring your own if you can) of our Mahana Blend and stroll down to the Mahurangi River at the bottom of the street to sip it in peace. Hot tip: be sure to grab yourself a dark chocolate and peanut butter smoothie bowl.

Visit Facebook or Instagram for their menu and more.

From The Heart Wholefood Cafe — 312 Hibiscus Coast Highway, Orewa

Not too far from Auckland central, and much closer to the slow summer life, you'll find the ardent team at From the Heart. Just a few hops back from Orewa beach they're serving Kōkako on their baby blue La Marzocco called Beatrix and the best smoothies, gelato and ice creams for miles. As the name would suggest, you’ll find a seasonal menu loaded with wholefood goodness — vegan, gluten-free and refined sugar-free options. Whether you’re down for wraps, soup or lasagne there’s something for everyone. Why not finish with a peppermint chocolate slice.

Visit Facebook for their menu and more.

Power Plant Organics — 37-41 Bank Street, Whangarei, Northland 0110

An oasis, Power Plant Organics is a 100 per cent plant-based wholefood and organic store and cafe located conveniently in Whangarei town centre. You’ll find both sweet and savoury dishes, deliciousness like their dhal bowls, frittatas and cabinets loaded with fresh salads. Then there’s the rotating offering of raw cheesecakes, tiramisu, strawberries and cream — and more recently the decaf mocha raw cheesecake. Wash it all down with our coffee and some Mama Zing Kombucha, especially on a hot sunny day.

Check Facebook for menu updates and more.

Little Red — 7 Cove Road Waipu, Northland

Little Red is located in a bright red shipping container next to the site of a 1940s engineering workshop that now sells beautiful vintage gifts and stylish things for your home. At Little Red, you’ll find Jacqui and her team pouring delightful coffees along with locally handmade doughnuts on Fridays and Saturdays from The Food Studio, Waipu. On a hot day, it's impossible to look past the deliciousness from Duck Island and Dr FeelGood on offer. Little Red is a must-visit for refuelling if passing through and yes they have Kōkako Nitro Cold Brew on tap!

The Cakery & Tea & Tarte - 2a Molesworth Drive, Mangawhai

Recently opened just before Christmas this tiny space (it's built in a tiny house) is found in Mangawhai shops. Louisa and her team are creating fabulous cakes to order just in case you're planning a party, Kōkako coffees and a range of cabinet food including those delightful cakes to sample. A great stop off before heading to the beach or bach.

Helena Bay Cafe — 1392 Russell Road | RD4 Hikurangi, Whangarei

Definitely a bit off the beaten track but well worth a visit. In addition to a seasonal kitchen menu, you’ll find a great range of cabinet food so you’re covered from pastries and coffee to go through to a more substantial lunch or dinner. There’s amazing coffee obviously — ideally paired with some peppermint slice. And the views are really something looking directly into a valley of native bush with ocean views on the horizon. And since the cafe is connected to an amazing art and sculpture gallery and garden, there are some fabulous artworks, handicrafts, furniture etcetera. You might even find something to take home!

A magical place with stunning surroundings you’ll find exceptional food and coffee obviously and there’s a chocolate factory too (there are even FREE SAMPLES!). It would be difficult to leave without taking home some chocolates, some Macadamia Butter Toffee Crunch too perhaps!

Kai 2 Go Kohukohu — 41 Beach Road, Kohukohu

This small food joint in Kohukohu has a menu that is both equally vast and accommodating keeping inevitable repeat visits fresh. Favourites include the fish burgers (though you’ll find vegetarian burgers on the menu too),  vegan toasted wraps and pizzas — with carb-less options available. Or if you’re keeping it light, the hot chips and rewana bread are on point if you just want a snack with your long black before you hit the road again or the ferry across to Rawene.

A recent addition of a drinks dispensing unit offers Nitro Cold Brew, Kombucha or Chia Sister’s juice on tap to stay or takeaway. They also do an amazing eggs benedict but check that they're open for breakfast beforehand. And that said, there are vegan options, plus an impressive cocktail menu.

You can order either from the kitchen menu or from the cabinet; the offering is always fantastic though makes choosing very difficult! Hawkes Bay

Mahia Service Centre — 1484 Nuhaka Opoutama Road, Hawkes Bay

Mahia's permanent population sits at around 700 souls but people have been travelling to the peninsula since forever ago. Beautiful Rongomaiwahine once lured Kahungunu to Mahia and when he finally arrived he was delighted to find that the stories were not exaggerated — it's true, the place is stunning. So when Tina, Dee and Mike, owner-operators of the Mahia Service Centre, got it to touch we jumped at the chance for our little bird to compliment such a jaw-dropping part of our country.

Visit Facebook for menu updates and other information.

Mitzi + Twinn — 118 Heretaunga Street, Hastings

Melissa and Harriet, the women behind Mitzi and Twinn, have been feeding the people of Hawkes Bay by way of grazing platters for a few years now. Drop-in for a delicious breakfast or lunch and if it's too hot for espresso, know you can order our Nitro Cold Brew on tap instead!

Hapi — 89 Hastings Street, Napier South, Napier

For hot summer days, pop into the second space of Hapi within the Chantal store for our Nitro Cold Brew on tap — this high vibing eatery is perhaps one of the healthiest places you can eat in New Zealand! In addition to the vegetarian, vegan eatery, there’s a selection of locally produced goods available to take home like organic miso made from Hawkes Bay grown black soybeans! Their cabinet display is something of wonder, with all the food well presented and the staff continuously preparing organic nutrient-dense menu items just behind the counter. Salad options are beyond amazing, the tofu stuffed "sushi roll also notable, scrambled eggs with our house-made kimchi on paleo toast! Divine. And there’s also complimentary cucumber-infused water.

The Kitchen — 111 Bridge Street, Nelson

Pick up some wholesome treats to fuel your adventures while around these parts. The spot is perfect for what owners Grant and Sherilyn Maxwell aim to provide: quality healthy food and to create a sense of community. There’s something for everyone — and plenty for vegetarians and vegans. Expect down-to-earth wholefood menu options including vegan banana waffles, Thai coconut curry and open sourdough sandwiches alongside our coffee or Nitro on tap.
