About Thea
Founded by cousins and first-generation Kiwis, Thea began with a simple goal, to bring great matcha to New Zealand.
Since 2016, they've been working directly with producers in Japan, sourcing matcha with a focus on quality, provenance and sustainability. What started as a passion for matcha has grown into a carefully curated range that celebrates the craft and tradition behind every cup.
The name Thea comes from L-theanine, a naturally occurring amino acid found in green tea.
What is Matcha?
Matcha is a finely ground powder made from specially grown green tea leaves. Unlike traditional tea, where the leaves are steeped and removed, matcha is whisked directly into water or milk, meaning you enjoy the whole leaf. The result is a vibrant, full-flavoured drink with a distinctive balance of sweetness, umami and gentle bitterness.
Why Japanese Matcha?
While tea cultivation originated in China, Japan has spent centuries refining the growing and processing methods that define matcha today.
Thea's matcha is sourced from Kyoto, a region renowned for its tea-growing heritage and dedication to quality. The result is matcha with depth, balance and a strong connection to place.
