We first met Maddy behind the coffee machine on her family's kiwifruit farm in Paengaroa in the Bay of Plenty. When she moved up to Auckland to start her Bachelor of Science in Ecology and Sustainability (yes, girl) we knew we'd be lucky to have her join our team so pitched the idea to her to work with us at West Supply.
Maddy's not one to anything by halves, she's putting in the work to be a future Black Stick (currently representing NZ for her age group) and she recently rode from Cape Reinga to the Bluff with her sister which she incredibly describes as a 'holiday'. Read on to get to know her a little better or head out to West Supply in Waimauku on Sundays to enjoy a coffee with Maddy in the flesh.
What is your first memory of coffee?
My parents have reinforced to me that their one coffee a day has to be a good one. The ritual of coffee has been honoured since I can remember.
*I didn't start drinking coffee until an appropriate age - but when I did, the ritual of it slotted quite nicely into my routine too.
And what made you want to work at our West Supply Coffee bar?
Coffee x outdoors. Two of my favourite things. I also have a huge amount of respect for Kōkako’s commitments to our planet.
What's your favourite coffee?
A Bombora blend oat milk flattie from lot sixty one in Amsterdam.
And when you're not drinking coffee, what do you drink?
First of all water, then kombucha, then a gin & tonic for occasions.
If money grew on trees where would you head to first when we're out the other side of this pandemic?
Straight to Chamonix! A little ski village at the base of Mont Blanc. I’ve got unfinished business with all of the adventures on the mountains there...
What do you take to a pot luck?
Moroccan carrot salad is always a good bet - the spices and the lemon do all of the work for you.
And when you’re not pulling shots, what will we find you doing?
I'm currently studying a Bachelor of Science in Ecology and Sustainability - so that tends to be my main endeavour. I also spend a lot of my time at the hockey turf. Otherwise i’ll either be outside exploring new spots / trails or tending to my plants and reading a good book
Can you please draw us a picture of West Supply Coffee?
A place that brings the community together. Good coffee. Good people. Good times.
